THE JOYCE THEATER ANNOUNCES ITS 2014-2015 FALL / WINTER SEASON

New York, New York, May 12, 2014 – Linda Shelton, Executive Director of The Joyce Theater, announced today the organization’s programming for its 2014-2015 fall/winter season, launching September 9 with the New York premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s extravagant production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, danced by the magnificent dancers of the National Ballet of Canada at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

Ballet will also be highlighted throughout The Joyce’s season in its landmark Chelsea home, with audience favorites like Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet on the roster. Especially exciting performances by principals and soloists from the renowned Royal Danish Ballet will follow the ever-delightful Les Ballets de Trockadero de Monte Carlo, returning for its bi-annual holiday engagement. Moving beyond ballet to contemporary dance, the season will include Complexions Dance Company, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Doug Varone and Dancers, and Parsons Dance, all of whom have danced on The Joyce stage for many years, and Russell Maliphant, who returns for the second time. Also on tap will be a shared week by the New York-based doug elkins choreography, etc. and BODYTRAFFiC, from Los Angeles. The season has an international focus, too, with the return of Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, from Spain, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, and the New York debut of Cia. Unión Tanguera, with roots in both Argentina and France. Closer to home, the New York-based American Dance Machine for the 21st Century will perform choreography from revered Broadway shows.

The Joyce is thrilled to open its fall season with the National Ballet of Canada’s performance of Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and to bring this astonishing piece to New York for the first time. Combining a “scenic spectacle of unprecedented extravagance” with “the extraordinary skill, versatility and spirit of the Canadian dancers” (Los Angeles Times), Wheeldon’s interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s immortal story is a true fantasia of dance. Experiencing this magnificent production on the Koch Theater stage is the perfect way to appreciate the startlingly beautiful sets and costumes by Tony Award winner Bob Crowley and the sublime score by the talented British composer Joby Talbot. Without doubt, this Alice is a brilliant theatrical gift. A co-production of The National Ballet of Canada and The Royal Ballet (UK).

Cia. Unión Tanguera, the celebrated French/Argentinean company, is an ensemble of extraordinary dancers and musicians who weave together sensuality and human emotion through the dance and music of contemporary and traditional Argentinean tango. Set to classic tango recordings and original compositions played live by a quartet of Buenos Aires’ finest musicians, Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night) examines with humor the desires and fears that are revealed in the course of a late-night milonga. Heralded for its artistic excellence and creativity, Pacific Northwest Ballet performs a sensational program that features the New York premieres of works by Christopher Wheeldon and Alejandro Cerrudo. Wheeldon’s Tide Harmonic, an enchanting work performed by four couples, is set to a score for chamber orchestra of the same name by British composer Joby Talbot. Cerrudo’s Memory Glow, a Joyce commission and the first piece that the choreographer has created for Pacific Northwest Ballet, is characterized by smooth, fluid movement that highlights the dancers’ masterful technique.

The internationally renowned Lar Lubovitch Dance Company follows its highly successful 45th anniversary season with the world premiere of a major new dance to be accompanied by live music. The company is uniformly praised for its supremely gifted dancers and its devotion to live music, and Lubovitch’s dances are likewise famous for their musicality, rhapsodic style and sophisticated formal structures. “Lar Lubovitch’s choreography is a thrilling sight…ravishing the eye…telling stories both complicated and mysterious.” (The New Yorker).
This new dance by one of America’s master choreographers is supported in part by the National Dance Project.

For nearly two decades, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has created cutting-edge global choreography from a base in the American West. The company returns for a seventh Joyce season with its winning stable of dancers, a stellar choreographic roster, and an unwavering commitment to advancing the art form through its unique brand of contemporary ballet. ASFB’s high-octane offerings­Cayetano Soto’s evocative Beautiful Mistake, Ji í Kylián’s seminal and rarely performed Return to a Strange Land, and Nicolo Fonte’s exuberant work, The Heart(s)pace, promise a program of compelling and innovative dance.

Following well-deserved critical accolades for her previous Joyce seasons, Soledad Barrio and her astounding company, Noche Flamenca, come back with Noche Flamenca y Antigona, featuring a night of flamenco with excerpts from Sophocles’ tragic tale. A living archive of musical theater dance, American Dance Machine for the 21st Century (ADM21) was founded by Artistic Producer Nikki Feirt Atkins. With Margo Sappington as Artistic Director, to date ADM21 has reconstructed original choreography from such revered musicals as Contact, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Big Deal, and Promises, Promises. On tap for its Joyce debut is an enchanting program featuring live music and special guest stars who will present the best of classic show-stopping musical theater dance.

Featuring choreography by Dwight Rhoden that “grabs the viewer by the eyeballs and refuses to let go” (Dance Magazine), Complexions celebrates its 20th Anniversary season by showcasing the diversity of its repertory and the brilliance of its artists. On a program of repertory favorites and premieres, Artistic Directors Rhoden and Desmond Richardson salute the company’s inaugural 1994 performance with appearances by special guest artists, including the phenomenal Desmond Richardson. Highlights include the premiere of Rhoden’s The Groove, set to the music of legendary New Orleans jazz musician Terence Blanchard, and Rhoden classics like Hissy Fits and Ave Maria. Completing the program are Surface, the 2008 work by Jae Man Joo, a new work by Marcelo Gomez, and the ballet Duo by William Forsythe.

The company returns to The Joyce with three New York premieres, including Symmetry and Narrative, a work set to Christopher Rouse’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto that explores dynamic new territory.

A program of works created by acclaimed choreographer Russell Maliphant, Still Current features newly created duets, trios, and solos danced by Russell Maliphant and his remarkable company, including Thomasin Gülgeç, Dickson Mbi, and Carys Staton, all of whom recently stunned audiences in Maliphant’s The Rodin Project. The award winning solos Afterlight (Part One) and Two are also on tap. A diverse physical language links the pieces, integrating vocabulary from contemporary, ballet, and martial arts. Performances feature outstanding lighting by long-time Maliphant collaborator Michael Hulls, musical compositions by Erik Satie and Armand Amar, and new music by Andy Cowton and Mukul. The internationally adored Trocks, the all-male troupe who risk comfort for brilliant pointe work, achieve “the perfect balance of tribute and sendup” (The Washington Post) as they tread lightly through the classics of ballet. For its 40th anniversary year, the company is guaranteed to bring down the house with two programs featuring some of its most beloved productions­Go For Barocco, ChopEniana, Don Quixote, and Swan Lake, as well as the New York premiere of excerpts from the delightful La Naiade et Le Pecheur, which made its world premiere in London in 1843. More than 170 years later, the Trocks bring it back for more.

Founded in 2007, Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFiC was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2013 and was praised by the Los Angeles Times for its “most hopeful combination of choreographic and performing excellence.” The Joyce program includes Dust by Hofesh Shechter, the Israeli-born British-based choreographer known for his blunt, earthy style, and a new work by Victor Quijada, the Montreal-based choreographer whose work blends break dancing and ballet.

“One of the most musical, witty and inventive choreographers of his generation,” (The New York Times), Doug Elkins comes back to The Joyce with the New York premiere of HAPLESS BIZARRE, a delightful dance for six performers including a new vaudevillian, which explores the intersections between physical comedy, choreography, flirtation, and romance; and MO(OR)TOWN/REDUX, which revisits, as only Elkins can, both Shakespeare’s Othello and Jose Limón’s seminal modern dance work The Moor’s Pavane.

New Orleans takes center stage as David Parsons presents a New York premiere set to music by the legendary Allen Toussaint. The company known for its sexy athleticism and stunning ensemble work also performs the world premiere of a work by former Parsons dancer, and Generation NOW Fellow, Natalie Lomonte. Also on tap­Bachiana, a humorous look at the formality and grandeur of baroque tradition set to Bach, and the perennial favorite Caught. Four family-friendly matinees will feature repertory for dance fans of all ages and a special opportunity to meet the dancers.

One of the most revolutionary contemporary dance companies in the world, this ensemble of raging young talents was founded in 1978 as an internal training ground for the highly respected Nederlands Dans Theater. Its Joyce season, the first in five years, promises to be a spectacular one, featuring the witty Shutters Shut and the expressive Subject to Change by NDT’s house choreographers, Artistic Director Paul Lightfoot and Artistic Advisor Sol León; I new then by NDT Associate Choreographer Johan Inger; and Sara, a provocative work by Israeli choreographers Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar. Thanks for this. Most of the ballet portions of the season look great (especially Royal Danish). However, the Canadians coming with only kiddie fare ALICE...really?

Of all venues, I wouldn't expect the Joyce to pander 'family-friendly fare'...maybe the Met, Koch or City Center. What's next: a DRACULA or PETER PAN at the Joyce?

If anyone is planning on going to the Joyce this week to see Russell Maliphant, you're in for a big surprise. He did not perform tonight, the opening night of his company's one week engagement at the Joyce. The program and casting was completely shuffled due to his absence. Very disappointing. No info on whether he will be out for the entire engagement.
