There were other highlights too, most notably a highly musical and effervescent rendering of George Balanchine's folk-flavored "Tarantella" by Ashley Bouder and Daniel Ulbricht, both YAGP alums now with NYCB. Ulbricht, a native of St. Petersberg, is always a hometown favorite and this piece gave him a chance to do what he does best — turn on the charisma, defy gravity and give a rebel's flair to every step. (So enthusiastic was his tambourine slapping that on one wallop, the cymbals flew off in multiple directions.)

The number of foreign dancers in Russian ballet companies increases every year. This is not surprising, since the Russian ballet school is respected all over the world.
