PeggyR Posted October 6, 2013 Share Posted October 6, 2013 San Francisco Ballet's principal dancer Sofiane Sylve tweeted this video, which apparently has won a first prize (well, she says 'price'), though she doesn't say where. I have no idea what's going on here, but Ms. Sylve could probably make walking across the street in a thunderstorm while carrying three bags of groceries look like a work of art, so maybe it doesn't really matter what's going on. This was interesting PeggyR - I happened to see the link on her Facebook page. The dancing is certainly only part of things: the fashions and the video editing are obviously a big part of this multi-media effort. I'm not sure either what prize was won for the video. ;) I'm wondering who did the choreography - Sylve? Link to comment

It seems pretty clear that she has another career ahead of her. I just saw Sylve as the "Tall Girl" in Rubies - Sofiane commands the stage in a way that no one else at SFB quite matches. How's that for a glimpse into the future?! Her description of the constantly changing repertoire/roles at NYCB gives an indication of why she would move on to SFB - where she is still able to perform in classic story ballets, while also being part of the creation of new ballets, each year. pherank Posted January 31, 2018 Share Posted January 31, 2018 (edited) Something I hadn't seen before: Sofiane at a Q&A with Ballet West students (Master Class Guest Teacher Series): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bexEmbPoDw4 This made me laugh - after giving her history in the ballet world (I remember that she was a professional dancer at 15 and possibly even 14 years of age) Sofiane adds, "Long journey. And I'm a hundred and two but I look great, right?" (big smile) An interesting observation about mental stress and its effects on the dancer's body: "if I look at all the European dancers that have moved to the U.S., within the first 6 to 8 months - people get injured."
