Nevada Ballet Theatre appoints Meunier and Martins co-directors of aca

NEVADA BALLET THEATRE APPOINTS MONIQUE MEUNIER AND NILAS MARTINS

AS CO-DIRECTORS OF THE ACADEMY OF NEVADA BALLET THEATRE

LAS VEGAS, NV (Thursday, May 30, 2013) Nevada Ballet Theatre has appointed former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer and American Ballet Theatre Soloist Monique Meunier and former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Nilas Martins as Co-Directors of the Academy of NBT. The husband and wife team will oversee the Las Vegas-based Academy's faculty and 400 students.

Founded in 1979, the Academy is the official school of NBT. With a 36,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility, it is the premiere ballet training center in Southern Nevada.

"Monique and Nilas are internationally acclaimed artists and teachers who have excelled at the highest levels of our profession," said Beth Barbre, Executive Director and CEO of NBT. "They have the vision and skills to build our Academy into one of the nation's leading ballet schools."

Ms. Meunier and Mr. Martins have worked with companies, universities, schools and festivals throughout the world, and are repetiteurs for The George Balanchine Trust. Ms. Meunier has served as Ballet Master for The Washington Ballet Trainee Program and full-time faculty member in its affiliated school. Mr. Martins recently completed a fellowship in the DeVos Institute for Arts Management at The Kennedy Center.

"Monique has transitioned from her career as one of the most brilliant ballerinas of her generation at both New York City Ballet and ABT into a leading voice in dance education in America today," said Heather Watts, former NYCB Principal Dancer and Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair.

"I have known Nilas as a student, dancer, choreographer and repetiteur and he has distinguished himself in all of these roles," said Kay Mazzo, Co-Chairman of Faculty for The School of American Ballet. "He is an accomplished ballet professional and an outstanding choice for this position."

"I applaud NBT for having the foresight to select Monique and Nilas as Directors of their Academy," said Peter Boal, Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet. "They have a wealth of experience and knowledge which will add immeasurably to the school, company and community."

The Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre is currently in preparations for its annual Spring Concert June 1 and 2 at Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at the UNLV Performing Arts Center. The Academy¡¦s Pre-Professional Program will present Don Quixote; the Children¡¦s Program will present Alice in Wonderland; and the Dance Program will present Live Inspirations. Upcoming Summer Programs at the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre include the Summer Intensive for students ages 8 ¡V 18 from June 17 ¡V June 28. This extensive one and two week training includes a variety of disciplines for serious dance students. Additional summer offerings include the new Adult Adv. Beginner/Intermediate class beginning Monday, June 10 through Friday, August 2, as well as a week of ¡§fall preparation¡¨ classes in August, designed to prepare students for the upcoming fall semester. Very interesting choice -- the organization has been stepping up into the next level, and this seems part of that transition. I cannot remember -- who was running the school previously. Was it someone Canfield brought with him from Portland?
