An obituary for Maria Tallchief in The Times.

She was born Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief in 1925, in Fairfax, Oklahoma, the daughter of Alexander Joseph Tall Chief and his Scots-Irish wife Ruth Porter. Alexander, who had three children by a first marriage, was a widower and Fairfax’s most eligible bachelor when he met Ruth. Tall, lanky and handsome, he didn’t have a job, but he owned property all over town. In 1906 his grandfather, Chief Peter Bigheart, had conducted the negotiations with the US government to secure the rights to oil reserves that made the Osage tribe wealthy.
