The Sarasota Ballet will hold a benefit performance.

The ballet has donated 100 seats to guests of All Children's; the remainder of the seats in the Mertz Theater are available to the general public for $25 each. A sold-out performance would result in a $10,000 contribution to the Hospital Guild.

Edwaard Liang is the new artistic director of BalletMet Columbus.

He was chosen from a field of more than 80 applicants, she said, as the unanimous selection of the search committee and the board.

Liang, who has been living in New York, will set up a residence in Columbus, which he visited for the first time in October while interviewing for the job.

BalletMet Columbus started its search for a new artistic director last spring after former Artistic Director Gerard Charles announced he would leave to become the Ballet Master at Chicago's famed Joffrey Ballet.

The very recently retired Cairo Opera House director Abdel Moneim Kamel has died at age 64. Thanks to Jayne for forwarding the link for posting.

Kamel is one of the pioneers of ballet in Egypt. He performed and choreographed hundreds of ballet and opera performances throughout his career. He was the lead solo performer in Egypt for 24 years from 1967 until 1991, performing in works like "Swan Lake," "The Nutcracker," "Don Quixote" and "Scheherazade."
