Balanchine tinkered with Serenade several times during his life -- some of the changes were substantial (sections added and shifted) and some were smaller. Tobi Tobias talks about watching that process over time in her recent review of NYCB. Russell was one of the first official representatives of Balanchine to stage work in Russia (she set Theme and Variations and I believe Ballet Imperial in the 1980s at the Kirov) and has told some pretty vivid stories about the experience. In general, she stages the version of the ballet that she knows from her performing tenure in the 50s and 60s.
