Although there are dozens of holiday productions around town, "Loyce Houlton's Nutcracker Fantasy" by Minnesota Dance Theatre always marks a high point in the year-end festivities. On opening night Friday at the Cowles Center, its celebratory spirits were clearly intact. It is a tradition, after all, designed to delight children, and it continues to do so under Lise Houlton's direction.

The Vienna Ballet is reviewed in the premiere of a ballet called "Bluebeard's Secret":

The Vienna Ballet continues to experiment with newer and lesser known works, premiering on Saturday "Bluebeard's Secret" ("Blaubarts Geheimnis") by German choreographer Stephan Thoss to an enthusiastic crowd.

The piece, first performed in February 2011 at the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, Germany, follows the immense success last season of "Carmina Burana," "Bolero" and "Afternoon of a Faun": three new pieces created by former Vienna Ballet dancers.

Alicia Alonso and the Cuban Ballet School have been presented with the Premio Roma Jia Ruskaja 2012 in Rome, the Italian capital, dedicated to celebrities who contribute to the development of dance teaching and schools.
