THE ROMANCE OF PERFECTION

A Photographic Exhibition by James Ostrer

Private View 12 Sep 7pm-10pm

Mon-Sat 10am-6pm;

Sun 12noon-5pm

Tel 020-7229 9006

Merchant Archive presents a series of atmospheric photographs by renowned artist James Ostrer of San Francisco Ballet principal dancer Maria Kochetkova dressed in Merchant Archive’s vintage clothing.

The exhibition celebrates her appearance with the ballet at Sadler’s Wells, EC1, 14-23 September.

James has been photographing Maria for 10 years and is inspired by her obsession with perfection and quirky passion for fashion. He uses his photographs as a canvas to symbolise and hint at hidden aspects of her character. As he says, “There is a containment of physical pain and control in ballet which is tightly interwoven with its grace and beauty. I wanted to suggest this through the images of birdcages and her being bound by vintage ribbons.”

JAMES OSTRER

James Ostrer is an artist using Neo Baroque techniques within the mediums of photography and film to examine the common thread of discomfort that underlines western culture. His first solo exhibition, “Death, Sex and Re-birth”, in 2009 explored themes such as gluttony, sexual compulsion and addiction.

In “Journey”, curated by actor Emma Thompson and activist Sam Roddick in a campaign against sex- trafficking, his work was seen alongside that of leading international artists such as Anish Kapoor and Anthony Micallef as well as Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell and art director Michael Howells. This ambitious exhibition toured New York, Vienna, Madrid and The Hague from 2009-2011.

Nominated as curator’s choice for the Taylor Wessing awards at the National Portrait Gallery, James’s 2010 portrait of “Nicky Haslam in Lucian Freud’s chair” explored the intimate relationship between the ‘socialite’ and the ‘artist’. This year he has participated in the Bloom Festival Public Art Event in Verona. One of 40 international artists invited to convert political billboards into exhibition spaces, his photograph was selected to promote the event.

MARIA KOCHETKOVA

Kochetkova also won the American TV series ‘Superstars of Dance’ in January 2009 on NBC and performs internationally as a guest artist with the Bolshoi and Stanislavsky Theatres in Moscow, the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg and the Tokyo Ballet in Japan.

Maria will be performing with San Francisco Ballet when they present three eclectic programmes at London’s Sadler’s Wells over two weeks from 14 September.

"vulnerability, playfulness, rebellion; characteristics repressed daily by the requirements of her trade."

Those characteristics didn't seem terribly repressed when MK danced in Giselle, Emeralds and Rubies.

vulnerability - any of the dying or tragic heroes -Swan Queen, Giselle, R&J, Tatiana, Marguerite...

playfulness - Sylphide, Giselle before madness, Manon ...

rebelliousness - Rubies, R&J, Siegfried ...

San Francisco Ballet, Sadler’s Wells, London

By Clement Crisp

The succeeding Classical Symphony is set to eponymous Prokofiev by the former Bolshoi dancer Yury Possokhov. It is buoyant, playfully snook-cocking, despatched with brightest verve by a cast led by the splendid Hansuke Yamamoto and Maria Kochetkova, and the choreography sits happily, saucily in its music, given with almost tangible delight by its cast.
