Nevada Ballet Theater holds its annual Black and White Ball and honors Eva Longoria as Woman of the Year.

There are added showbiz elements to this year’s celebration at Aria and Crystals at MGM’s CityCenter, with actress and singer Susan Anton joining celebrity auctioneer Christian Kolberg for the auction, plus Broadway beauty Leigh Zimmerman joining me on the paddle raise to secure more than $150,000 in scholarships for gifted students of Future Dance.

But the two highlights will be the Woman of the Year presentation to Eva and the surprise introduction of dance superstar Cynthia Gregory. Cynthia is joining the NBT family in time for the May 5 debut performance of the company at its new home in the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

An obituary for Rudi van Dantzig by Anna Kisselgoff in The New York Times.

Mr. van Dantzig left in 1959 to join a new company, Netherlands Dance Theater. But he returned to the National Ballet, eventually succeeding Ms. Gaskell with a co-director in 1969. He was the sole artistic director from 1971 until he stepped down in 1991.

Over the years, he staged his works in many companies throughout the world at a time when his social themes and passionate statements were more in fashion. "Our messages are not dark," he said in 1976. "We are realistic."
