A review of Birmingham Royal Ballet by G.J. Dowler for Classical Source.

Quote

Pineapple Poll is, quite simply, barking mad: a silly concoction to a silly story – but it is adorable, funny and highly enjoyable. Essentially a young John Cranko’s essay in a Massine-style romp (think Gaîté Parisienne), it contains two peach roles – the heart-swooningly handsome Captain Belaye (commander of the HMS Hot Cross Bun) and Pineapple Poll herself, a Bumboat Woman. From such unpromising beginnings, he crafted an overlong but still hugely enjoyable comic ballet, full of heave-hoing jolly jack tars, swooning dock girls, a dippy fiancée and a dragon maiden aunt, all to the felicities of Charles Mackerras’s artful arrangement of Sullivan’s toe-tappable, hummable music.....

Eugene Ballet opens its season with 'Romeo and Juliet.'

Quote

The season opener will star Juan Carlos Amy-Cordero as Romeo and Yoshie Oshima as Juliet. Amy-Cordero joined Eugene Ballet Company in 2002 from the Boston Ballet; he was promoted to principal dancer in 2007. Oshima graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the aspirant program of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She won first prize in the Ballet Competition for Youth in her native Japan.

The Renaissance costumes are so elaborate, said LaRue, that crew have been competing to see who can put the most rhinestones on a garment. Fight choreographer Christopher Villa and fencing master William Mark Hulings have overseen the authenticity of the fights.
