Ballet Documentary "First Position" Premieres at Toronto

Recommended Posts

On Sunday, September 11, the ballet documentary, "First Position," will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival at the Isabel Bader Theatre at 3:30pm. The film follows six talented dancers as they prepare for the Youth America Grand Prix New York City Finals which could transform their lives overnight. They surmount injury, disappointment, and grueling rehearsals in a passion to succeed that trumps money, politics, and even war.

Dave Robson of Sound on Sight wrote, “First Position is an enjoyable look inside the competitive world of ballet. In my mind, the talent of the dancers alone recommends the film."

"Brian McKechnie of Criticize This! called the film a “…beautiful and thoughtful masterpiece.” He also wrote, “The passion and talent from these kids is stunning to watch and will leave an impression on everyone who sees it."

I watched the Works & Process presentation on the YAGP this weekend and was really impressed by Aran Bell, the 12 year old winner. The judges were so encouraging and diplomatic in their criticism. I expected them to be more harsh, particularly in light of the general stereotype of ballet instructors.

You can get to the official trailer, which is different from the video MRR posted (thank you!), through the film's homepage, here.

I hope First Position will keep us posted on cities and dates as the film goes into theatrical release. I, too, am very eager to see it, especially since I recognize some familiar faces.
