A review of the National Ballet of China in 'The Peony Pavilion' by Clifford Bishop in The Independent.

The National Ballet of China's The Peony Pavilion may come with pointe shoes, arabesques and a full symphony orchestra, but it shares much of its DNA with traditional Chinese opera. It has the same impact on untutored Western eyes – that of a spectacle as exquisite as it is incomprehensible.

Ros Warby creates a work inspired by "Swan Lake."

This month, audiences will experience a new take on the classical swan. Dancer Ros Warby will perform Monumental, an intense and, at times, comical solo work about the swan and the soldier - both iconic images in classical ballets.

''I'm a classically trained dancer but I went straight into modern dance,'' Warby says. ''All those years of training and seeing classical ballets as a young dancer have imprinted on my body. So for Monumental, I wanted to articulate the vulnerabilities, strengths and power of the ballerina.''
