It has just been announced here that the Polar Prize for music will be awarded to singer-poet Patti Smith and to the "Chronos Quartet". :clapping:

The Polar Prize is some kind of Nobel Prize for music and comes from the estate of Stickan Andersson who was the very successful manager of the Swedish group ABBA. So the US got both awards this time! :flowers:

Add me to the list of Kronos fans. An honor much deserved.

I was curious about the conversion value of 1,000,000 Swedish kroner. It's around $165.000. That should pay for commissioning a couple of very nice new pieces.

It's nice that one award is for contemporary and one for classical. The list of previous Plar Prize winners (thanks, leonid, for the link) is fascinating and a tribute to human creativity.

Many will be playing their Kronos and/or Patti Smith recordings today. Let's also give some thanks to ABBA and give them some replays, too.

Yes! I remember Studs Terkel, as he was interviewing David Harrington back in the mid-eighties, saying that "Bartok is your Bach." I was fortunate to hear them a couple of times in the beautiful Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, MA. Smith fans, if you haven't read her memoir, "Just Kids," you have a treat in store.
