Ballet Chicago at Athenaeum Theater 10 & 13-15 May 2011

Recommended Posts

More ambitiously calling itself Ballet Chicago this time instead of "Ballet Chicago Studio Company," the troupe will present their Spring repertory program over the second weekend in May, Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th at 7:30pm and Sunday the 15th at 3:00pm in the Athenaeum Theater, 2936 N. Southport, in Chicago. The program consists of Balanchine's Serenade, "Rubies" from Jewels, and Who Cares? - or perhaps more like twelve of the original seventeen numbers from it - to music by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Gershwin, respectively. If past experience is any guide, Balanchine of this high caliber is rare in Chicago, so their ambition seems justified to me, and prices are moderate: From $30 and down, available from Ticketmaster, 800-982-2787, or visit the box office.

And on the evening of Mother's Day, Tuesday the 10th, there's an open-rehearsal fundraiser, at the fundraiser price of $75 - which includes, I believe, a ticket to one of the weekend performances - to aid their scholarship fund, from 7:00pm until 9:00, when glimpses of the program will be on view accompanied by some remarks by Patricia Blair, the troupe's Associate Artistic Director, and dancer and choreographer Ted Seymour.
