1938 SAB Photos in LIFE

8 posts in this topic

I found a series of LIFE Magazine Photos of SAB in 1936 -- all in white tutus, by Eisey, as he was called. There are about 8 pictures. I've seen many but not all of these. Any identifications? This was the period of "On Your Toes" and the season at the Metropolitan Opera (just leafing through Chujoy). The male teacher might have been Vilzak.

I believe that studio was on Broadway at 84th Street. It was later occupied by a school run by Barbara Fallis and Richard Thomas. I studied there in the 70s. It is now a Barnes & Noble.

I don't think so. The date is 1936, so that would have been at Madison and 59th Street. They moved into the 83rd St. school many years later.

Yes, this is the original SAB at 637 Madison Ave., which had been the Isadora Duncan school in NYC.

It was those windows that threw me off. The 83rd street building has those same kind.

The man at the barre? Are we seeing the same image, or has it changed since the link was posted? I see three women in white costumes standing around a man in street clothes seated at a piano. Nobody at a barre; no male teacher.
