2 posts in this topic

Russian newspaper announces appointment of Mariinsky Principal, Andrian Fadeev, as the Artistic Director of one of St. Petersburg's top ballet companies, the Leonid Jacobson Ballet (ex-Choreographic Minitatures/Leningrad State Academic Ballet...which tours overseas as St. Petersburg State Ballet).

Until recently, this troupe was led by Yuri Petukhov and, before that, Askold Makarov (and many famous people before Makarov, incl Jacobson himself, through Jacobson was not the founder).

To folks who have e-mailed or PM'ed me with request to translate the Fontanka Journal article so that it make more sense than merely Babble-translating it, here it is. *Please note that nowhere in the article does it state that Fadeev is no longer dancing with the Mariinsky. It could very well be that he remains on the MT's Principal roster while serving as A.D. of another troupe, just as Igor Zelensky is doing (AD of the troupe in Novosibirsk, Siberia, while dancing with the MT on occasion).

Andrian Fadeyev Becomes the Artistic Director of the Jacobsson Theater of Ballet

The St. Petersburg City Cultural Committee has appointed Mariinsky Theater soloist and Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Andrian Fadeev as Artistic Director of the St. Petersburg State Academic Theater of Ballet (named after) Leonid Jacobson [commonly known by its short name Jacobson Theater of Ballet]. Soon he will be presented to his new company. "I am confident that with the arrival of a very professional, modern-thinking dancer of international reknown, the Jacobson Ballet’s future is in very good hands,” said a Culture Committee spokesperson.

In other news, the Cultural Committee is presently undertaking a serious campaign (policy) to strengthen St. Petersburg's ballet scene (all stages)."Our position is simple: the historical treasure of Russian ballet requires not only occasional admiration, but also constant care. For this very reason, for example, we are now building the Mariinsky II theater. Also for this very reason, in 2012 we will inaugurate the new Boris Eifman Academy of Dance. For this very reason, Nacho Duato now works in our city and we are organizing a big international ballet festival. And for this very reason we want to foster a serious ‘renaissance’ of the very talented Jacobson Theater of Ballet," stated the Chairman of the St. Petersburg Cultural Committee, Anton Gubankov.
