Pamela Moberg Posted March 17, 2011 Share Posted March 17, 2011 The Italian-born conductor Riccardo Muti, currently the leader of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been awarded the Birgit Nilsson Prize. He is the second recipient - the first one was Placido Domingo. The prize is of one million dollars and will be given by the King of Sweden. According to the rules the prize is to be given as close to October 9 as possible, reason for this is that it was the date of Mme. Nilsson's debut at the Stockholm Opera House. Helene Posted March 18, 2011 Share Posted March 18, 2011 Nilsson, who created the awarding organization before she died, hand-picked Domingo as the first recipient, but the prize wasn't awarded until after she died. General Director of Seattle Opera, Speight Jenkins, was on the selection committee.
