California Posted January 13, 2011 Share Posted January 13, 2011 OCPAC just announced that they are changing their name to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-ocpac-name-20110113,0,4348459.story Buried down in the story is an announcement that they are commissioning new work for Osipova and Vasiliev for October 2012. ". . . the center on Wednesday announced a new performance initiative the commissioning of a full-evening dance program starring Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev, independent of their work as leading dancers with the Bolshoi Ballet. The choreographer has not been chosen. Dwyer said the program will premiere in October 2012 as the latest in a series of dance commissions by the center that includes "Reflections," an assemblage of mainly new pieces the Bolshoi will premiere in Costa Mesa next week." ksk04 Posted January 13, 2011 Share Posted January 13, 2011 Hmmm. So is this a "program" a la Beauty in Motion/Kings of Dance/Reflections? If so, ugh. The Ardani Arts stranglehold on the Center is getting to be too much. Is it took much to ask to just have a variety of actual ballet companies come for a week of performances that don't include starry galas and odd contemporary mashups with classical dancers trying to branch out?? The OCPAC name has always sounded a bit political rather that arts related, but at least the full title is related to the place where they work -- I can understand the desire to honor major donors (and perhaps encourage them to keep donating) but this does imply that the community at large really has nothing to do with the organization. I was curious about this phrase "a full-evening dance program." Do you think this mean a program-length dancework, or several, smaller works? The language "full-evening dance program" is pretty vague -- probably anybody's guess at this point, although it seems more likely they'll do several shorter pieces. I noticed a comment on one of these stories complaining about the name change, viz., that there have been several other major donors to OCPAC -- how does this make them feel?
