Anthony Rolfe Johnson has died at age 69. Not the richest tenor in the world but a very musical one and most pleasing to this untutored ear. RIP.

It was on joining a local choir ("I was looking for something to relax me") that his potential became apparent to his fellow singers, one of whom had connections in the London conservatoires. He was soon at the Guildhall School of Music taking lessons with Ellis Keeler and Vera Rózsa. Later the tenors Richard Lewis and Peter Pears would have a pronounced influence on his technique, but first he had to learn to read music. Already a dozen years behind his contemporaries, Rolfe Johnson quickly threw himself into making up the lost ground.

The Guardian

The blossoming of Anthony Rolfe Johnson's career coincided with the rise of the period-instrument movement, and he was a supreme stylist, with one of the most appealing voices in the business. While his Evangelist was incomparable, the many roles he undertook in Handel oratorios and operas displayed a wider range of dramatic colouring.

I'll say. The discography is vast and if you were listening to period instrument recordings during a certain era he was just about unavoidable.
