Hello everyone!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I've been poking around here for a while now, almost as long as I've actually begun to learn to enjoy ballet. Which isn't very long, by the way; I estimate that it's been hardly a month since I was first captivated by Gillian Murphy in the ABT production of Swan Lake. (In fact, I think I found this forum because I was trying to figure out how to pronounce "pas de deux".)

Prior to watching Swan Lake, I've never had any significant exposure to ballet (besides perhaps playing a bit of the Nutcracker Suite in high school orchestra once). I did, however, have a pre-existing interest in classical music, and a decent working knowledge of the romantic era. Since I already loved Tchaikovsky's symphonies and violin/piano concerti, I thought I'd give his most famous ballet a try -- and who knew that I'd fall in love with that too.

So far I've seen Swan Lake, Coppelia, Giselle, The Nutcracker, and Romeo and Juliet (and I'm in the middle of Act II of Sleeping Beauty, with a copy of La Fille Mal Gardee queued for after I've finished that). All of these have been on DVD, as I don't live in a metropolitan area. And as generic as it sounds, I'd have to say that Swan Lake and Giselle have been my favorites so far, both in terms of the ballet proper, and the music. (My sympathies with Odette, though of all the main characters in Giselle, I pity Hilarion the most -- in my opinion, Giselle should have done some more pre-marital research, while I see Albrecht as just slightly less bad than von Rothbart.)

Anyway, I'm happy to be joining you all here, and very excited to continue this journey of discovering the joys of ballet! :clapping:
