The Colorado Ballet in Denver has announced its 2010-11 season, cutting back from 5 to 4 programs:

Sept. 10-12, Newman Center, triple bill. Two revivals and a premiere by Pennsylvania Ballet resident choreographer Matthew Neenam.

Oct. 15-24, Caulkins Opera House, "Dracula"

Nov. 27-Dec. 26, Caulkins Opera House, "The Nutcracker"

Feb. 25-March 6, Caulkins Opera House, "Romeo and Juliet"

In keeping with the Denver tradition of arts company tripping over each other, the Colorado Ballet's production of Dracula will occur during the Denver Center Theatre Company's production of, yes, Dracula. The 2 theatres are in the same complex.

It's disappointing that there won't be a Spring ballet next year. Unfortunately, "edgy" shows in which inventiveness reins over aesthetics don't do well in Denver. (After seeing a rehearsal of the definitely non-pretty Echoing of Trumpets, I wonder how well this year's Spring production will go over.)

Oooh, in the same theater complex -- that's a good one!  Don't feel beleagured, though -- dance companies up here in Seattle are constantly programming of top of each other, no matter how often we all complain about it.  If they're smart, they'll try to take advantage of this overlap by cross-promoting their events.

But ... you CAN'T have too many Draculas!  Or did that particular trend commit suicide by overexposure  5 years ago?  I wonder how Denver's production compares to the Ben Stevenson version that Houston exported to a number of companies a while ago.

Colorado's version should be Michael Pink's choreography which actually follows the book closer than any other ballet version out there. Ben Stevenson's from when I saw it many years ago is nothing like the book except for the fact of the title character.

The Denver Post article only mentions one of the two "revivals" in the season opener, Lars Lubovitch's ,,,smile with my heart. The other one will be Edwaard Liang's Feast of the Gods.
