[Ballet fan]

I thought I'd start a thread just for fun and for helping purposes about ballet videos.

Just post which ballet DVD's you have and if possible where you got them. This can also help other members find a DVD they've been trying to find (obeying of course the rule of no trading in here). You can also post if you have any homemade videos or recordings of performances broadcast on TV, etc.

This is fabulous Ballet Fan, thanks! My tiny collection are videos taped from tv showings. I've been thinking of investing in a nice dvd collection; little by little over time. Your list will be a wonderful reference.

Too bad about that Bolshoi Giselle at the end of the list, Ballet fan!  But I have sometimes over the years put down a recording of something I couldn't play right away, for later consumption, like good wine.  Have you tried your computer?  Mine surprised me when my DVD player spit out a disc someone sent me:  My computer played it fine, and in answer to my querying fingers, it told me that was a PAL recording, too.

I noticed Amazon is your most common source.  Did you use the banner ad at the top of these pages?  I hope so, because I think BT derives a third of its operating funds from clicking that ad.

Great topic.  I use the library for the newer dvd's, or borrow from friends.  I own all of Rudolf Nureyev's (I think); plus, I have tapes that I made from PBS.  I purchased them from Amazon, Kulture, and the old Ballet Shop, in New York.  

Other than Nureyev's, I have:
    La Bayadere - Hilaire and Guerin
    Firestone Theater compilation

    Der Fledermaus - with Cragun and Panov - my tape from PBS in 1989
    Baryshnikov Dances Balachine, with the ABT - my tape from PBS

What a pity PBS rarely airs ballet - well, in Boston anyway.

Where did you obtain copies of all the Mariinsky contructions? Sleeping Beauty, etc? Would love to get them somehow!

And just to clarify, I never intended to encourage requests and have actually never traded any of my videos, I'm just an avid ballet video collector and am rather proud of my collection

Oh dear, I'm not as ambitious as bookishmaud. I, too, own several hundred videos and DVD's, mostly VHS purchased via ebay over the years. I began by perusing the shelves at Towers. They had a pretty good sampling, but I could allow myself, at most, 3 videos a visit. I bought manyl Balanchine videos from Capezio's. Once I started bidding for them on ebay there was no stopping me. I used to catalog them, but didn't keep it up.

It's interesting to have several versions of the same ballet, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, Giselle, La Bayadère, Don Q, for example. One problem watching the same tape over and over is it makes me want to see the dancers in person!

I'm a composr and had posted this ballet-oriented video on You Tube back in March, 2011. It features one of my compositions, "The Music Box", and to my great pleasure, I've learned that quite a few dancers are using it for various ballet purposes, even requesting the sheet music.

I appreciate your time and I sincerely hope you enjoy it. I plan to post another similar video soon, which will feature a new song I wrote that I feel would work well as a ballet composition.

I think toeprints might mean the ballet shop that was on Broadway near 64th? I think there's a Starbucks there now. I purchased my autographed copy of the Suzanne Farrel book there as well as Costumes by Karinska. Wish it were still there.

Hi. May I suggest running searches for "ballet" on the various-language Amazon.com sites?  That may be a more efficient way of achieving your goal of obtaining a long list of 'what's out there, legally, on DVD."

Puppytreats, "The Ballet Shop" was a tiny gem of a bookshop on Broadway that closed at least 12 yrs ago. They also had a wall of dance-related VHS videos for sale and even some pricey autographed mementos...e.g., photos and ballet shoes once belonging to Baryshnikov, Makarova, Nureyev, etc. The guys who ran the sales desk (Tobi and Joe) were also huge dance fans and served-up some of the best ballet gossip in town. It was on B'wy, just south of Lincoln Center (same block as the Empire Hotel).

Link to the 2009 obit of Norman Crider, who was the owner of The Ballet Shop, which closed in 1996. I had always heard rumors about the "unofficial ballet tapes catalogue" of treasures for "research' (ahum...not to say "for sale")...but only VIPs like Nureyev had 'access' to it, as cited in this obit.  I'm not sure what became of Tobi Liebovitz, Crider's associate, who had moved to Indianapolis with Crider. Tobi was 'the master of the videos.'
