Valentina Kozlova's Dance Conservatory Company will return to Symphony Space with its production of Tchaikovsky's full-length NUTCRACKER, Saturday December 5 at 4 PM & 8 PM.
Margo Sappington's unique theatrical sense will be seen in Act I, for which she created original choreography; the former Joffrey Ballet principal will also put in an appearance as "Auntie Drosselmeyer." Act II has traditional staging by Kozlova after Petipa and Vasily Vainonen, formerly with the Kirov Ballet, and features all the well-loved divertissements - Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Arabian, Mirlitons, Waltz of the Flowers, and the Grand Pas de Deux. The production will be performed by students from the Kozlova midtown school, with professional guest artists in the principal roles.
Kozlova, a former principal dancer with the Bolshoi (she defected in 1979 when the Company was on tour in Los Angeles) and New York City Ballet (for 13 years), has collaborated with Margo Sappington since they co-directed Ballet: The Daring Project, a company which performed three seasons at The Joyce, as well as performances in the U.S. and Italy. Sappington danced with and has created ballets for The Joffrey Ballet; and guest choreographs for companies around the world. Kozlova and Sappington have both also starred in Broadway shows - Kozlova in "On Your Toes" in 1982; and Sappington as choreographer and dancer for the original Oh! Calcutta!. In the past few years, Kozlova has established herself as a major ballet teacher and coach, producing young dancers who not only have strong techniques, but a sense of the classical grand manner and the authentic styles of the ballets they perform.
