The Saint and The Sultan by Paul Moses tells the story of a meeting between St. Francis of Assisi and Malik al-Kamil, the Sultan of Egypt and a nephew of Saladin, in 1219 during the Fifth Crusade. You can read more here:

Not only do I live in a city named after him, but St. Francis was my animal-loving family's favorite saint. Book's on preorder and can't wait to read it. Thanks for the heads up.
