ARKA BALLET ~ A CELEBRATION

Washington, DC – ARKA Ballet celebrates its 10th anniversary with two performance at the American Dance Institute June 20 and 21, 2009. A blend of classical and contemporary ballet works, the program features romantic gems of the classical repertoire as well the US premiere of a new ballet by Roudolf Kharatian.

For ARKA Ballet's 10th Anniversary, Artistic Director Roudolf Kharatian and Associate Artistic Director Jonathan Jordan have put together a program of ballets that will showcase the breadth of talent on this chamber-size company; they have selected a selection of works that are new to the company's repertoire.

The evening features the US premiere of La Revancha del Tango (redux), a new ballet by Roudolf Kharatian. La Revancha del Tango was originally commissioned by the National Ballet of Armenia and premiered at the Armenian National Opera House in 2008 with 20 dancers and sets inspired by one of Kharatian's paintings. Kharatian has adapted the work for ARKA Ballet's 10 dancers. Using the music of the Gotan Project, Kharatian explores the inner workings, the passion and the intensity, of the tango. "In this piece, I bring together past influences and present aspirations to present a snapshot of young people today as they navigate the dynamics of complex relationships", says Kharatian. "These relationships are familiar to us, they draw us in, because they mirror our own instinctive rhythms, our attractions, our passions, our desires".

Le Grand Pas de Quatre is a ballet divertissement choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1845 to music composed by Cesare Pugni. On the night it premiered in London, (July 1845) it caused quite a sensation as it brought together, on one stage, the four greatest ballerinas of the time. The ballerinas were, in order of appearance, Lucile Grahn, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, and Marie Taglioni. The order of appearance was done by age, from youngest to oldest, to forestall further confrontations between them. The original cast of Pas de Quatre only danced four performances together.

Also on the program, The Fairy Doll Pas de Trois (S. & N. Legat/Drigo), the Pas de Deux from Flower Festival at Genzano (Bournonville/Pauli after Strebinger) and – in tribute to Les Ballets Russes' 100th Anniversary -- an excerpt from Sheherazade (Fokine/Rimsky-Korsakov).

For this program, dancers include Elizabeth Gaither, Sona Kharatian, Jonathan Jordan and Luis Torres. Also appearing will be Diana Albrecht, Morgann Frederick, Rui Huang, Jade Payette, Corey Landolt, Tyler Savoie and Marcelo Martinez.

ARKA Ballet's mission is to nurture, develop and showcase talented dancers and to provide opportunities for choreographic experimentation and development by promising and rising choreographers. ARKA Ballet premiered in 1999 with a gala performance at the Kennedy Center. Since then it has performed throughout the Greater Washington DC area, and toured nationally and internationally. Plans are currently underway for a summer 2010 European tour.
