Alexandra Posted March 3, 2002 Share Posted March 3, 2002 An interesting article by Jack Anderson in today's NYTimes about the current (well, 30-year-old) trend of trying to make ballets out of operas: quote: Dance and opera proceed according to different time schemes. Vocal music often needs time in which to unfold, if sung words are to be understood and their emotional points are to register. Operatic composers can even make time seem to stand still in steady outpourings of eloquent phrases. Wagner, in particular, was a master at this. Choreographers, too, sometimes delight in expansiveness. But, more often, moving bodies create emotional effects with unusual rapidity.
