Marina Svetlova, who played an important role in American dance education after a wide-ranging performing career in international ballet from the 1930s to the 1960s, died on Feb. 11 at her home in Bloomington, Ind. She was 86.

She died after being in failing health since a stroke several years ago, said Lawrence Davis, a longtime friend.

tho' the NYT obit doesn't say so, it's been said that Svetlova took her name from Valerian Svetlov, the scholar and dance critic who was married to Trefilova, who was, perhaps, M.S's most prominent and revered teacher.

the attached scan shows a John Lindquist photo, dated 1942, that documents M.S. at Jacob's Pillow where the photographer had a longstanding connection.
