Fadeev Falls - injured - in DON Q

8 posts in this topic

NEWS FLASH -

I just got home after the last Kirov-Mariinsky performance of DON Q in DC. A great run ends on a sad note as the performance's Basil, Andrian Fadeev (one of the company's top male Principals), falls in the landing of a double-tour ('corkscrew jump") in the first diagonal of the Grand PDD's Coda. He got up and struggled off the stage on his own. Company Director -- also Fadeev's coach -- Yuri Fateev, who was sitting directly in front of me in the auditorium, lept to his feet and ran backstage. Fadeev never came back out. Just a a couple of minutes earlier, Fadeev had completed a SPECTACULAR solo in that pdd...he was dancing the start of that coda on a high -- huge leaps. Then the fall.

The ballet ended only with Kitri - Viktoria Tereshkina - in the middle of the stage, shedding tears. Don Quixote, V. Ponomaryev, escorted her to take her curtain call.

We are all in shock. No word yet on Fadeev's status and the details on the injury. He landed hard on his left foot. I pray that this beloved PRINCE of the Mariinsky be well and return ot the stage as soon as possible.

My review will follow in the usual thread on the run. For now, I do not have the heart to do a review.

Omigod that is absolutely awful. Poor Fadeev. I hope the injury is not serious, although if Tereshkina was in tears it must have been frightening. :clapping:

I think that area of the stage was slippery. In the first act he also had a slip of the foot caught himself and Kitri's waist at the same time. I hope he will be alright.

What terrible news. :clapping: He is my favorite male principal at the Mariinsky. I hope he is able to recover fully.

It was a horrible end to a wonderful performance. After it ended I headed out towards the Kennedy Center shuttle but the line outside was long and I ran into YID there just inside the door – which is next to the stage door. We stood there chatting while I waited for the shuttle which took forever due to the insane traffic (the inaugural weekend concert was just down the road at the Lincoln Memorial). While we were standing there I watched an ambulance pull up and my heart sank. Sure enough they went inside and 10 minutes later they came out with Fadeev on a stretcher, his leg in a boot. The crowd of 10 – 15 of us started applauding him and he gave us a big smile & waive. YID spoke to some people who were with the company and they said that the extent & nature of the injury wasn't known, he was being taken to the hospital for X-Rays. It looked like a serious injury, but the fact that he was able to smile and didn't appear to be in pain gives me hope - maybe it looked worse than it was. Here's hoping he recovers quickly and completely.

It sounded like the bad ankle bruise I suffered some 14 years ago--my feet was swelling and looked black for about three weeks, but I was able to be walking normally by the end of three weeks. :) Sounds like what American football players suffer every now and then.

I have never seen Fadeev dancing in person, but I pray for his fast recovery and prompt return to the stage. God bless the hands of his health care providers.
