VIENNA (AFP) — French star dancer Manuel Legris will take over the Vienna Opera and Popular Opera ballets in 2010, the two companies announced Thursday.

Legris, an "etoile" of the Paris Opera, will replace current ballet director Gyula Harangozo of Hungary, whose five-year term runs out in September 2010.

He will also lead the Opera's ballet school.

Legris, 44, quickly rose through the ranks of the prestigious Paris Opera after joining the corps de ballet at 16, and was named "etoile," the top distinction for ballet dancers, in 1986 by then ballet director Rudolf Nureyev.

The French dancer, who will officially bid farewell to the Paris Opera on May 15, has already performed on several occasions as a guest at the Vienna institution.

Austrian Culture Minister Claudia Schmied welcomed the announcement Thursday, describing Legris as "one of the leading dancers of our time."

What fantastic news, they are very lucky to secure the services of Manuel Legris. Am I right in thinking he has not been active in under taking choreography, at the Paris Opera, as have Jose Martinez, Kader Belbarbi and Nicholas Le Riche?

I always await eagerly the New Years Day Concert from Vienna, as there is often a high proportion of Ballet shown in the programme, on screen, but regretfully not in the concert hall. This year Malakov did the choreography, which was danced to some of the less known composers works. It is one of my ambitions to go, but the seats evidently get sold out very quickly So I will probsbly have to be sat isfied in watching it on television. :)

How exciting for him! I wonder how this will affect his plans to dance as a guest with POB? (From his website: "I have to notice that it will be absolutly a non definitive farewell as a performer, and i will continue to perform as a guest."

Legris hasn't done much (any?) choreography at POB. But he did choreograph a pas de deux for Dorothée Gilbert and Mathieu Ganio during the last "Manuel Legris et ses étoiles" tour in Japan in 2007. I think it was called "Donizetti Variations." They're some pictures floating around on the internet.

For the Francophones out there, here is a television interview with Manuel Legris, about 10 minutes in length. Among other things, he discusses dancing the title role in Cranko's Onegin (there are a couple of clips with Clairemarie Osta as Tatiana), his imminent retirement, the POB's new étoiles, his own promotion in New York, his new position in Vienna and what makes working at the Paris Opera so special.

Are there plans to make this Onegin available on dvd?
