Cinderella

Recommended Posts

I have only found out recently about this ballet and am fascinated by it! What information is available on the ballet? Can anyone answer these questions?

a) Is there a recording available of the music?

b) Does anyone perform "Cinderella" to this music?

c) Does the score still exist?

d) How does this ballet differ to Prokofiev's (structurally, not musically. For example, are there still the four seasonal fairies, etc.)?

e) I know that the notation doesn't exist in the Sergeyev Collection but is there any other possibility for reconstruction?

Thankyou for anyone with information!

Bits of this ballet exist within other Petipa ballets, perhaps the best known being 'Medora's Solo' in the current Mariinsky version of the Le Corsaire cave scene.

Alas, the ballet is not among the complete-work scores/notes in the N. Sergeev Collection at Harvard University.

But a bit of hope -- the Maryinsky's archives contain a very large backlog of "uncatalogued". Since about 1990, the archivists and librarians there have been working diligently to make this backlog more accessible, especially to themselves, and bring the collection up to modern standards. This backlogging happens a lot worldwide with institutions of long establishment. When you see a record with the donor line marked "Found In Collection", you know that means, "Damned if we know how we got this, but here it is!" Like almost all libraries and museums, they are overworked and understaffed, but they are the potential heroes to posterity for saving much priceless material.
