Prix de Lausanne 2009 - January 27th to February 1st

Created in 1973, the Prix de Lausanne is an international competition for young dancers aged 15 to 18. One of a kind, its prime objective is to discover, promote, and support talents among the world’s finest young dancers.

Over 40 (some of them are mentioned below) of the world’s leading dancing companies and schools are partners and support the Prix de Lausanne, and many of today’s leading professional dancers are laureates of the Prix de Lausanne, such as: Carlos Acosta, Ivan Poutrov, Alina Cojocaru who are Principals at The Royal Ballet in London; Stéphane Elizabe, José Martinez, Laetitia Pujol who are Etoiles at the Opéra de Paris; Julie Cox Kent, Gillian Murphy, Marcelo Gomes who are Principals at the American Ballet Theatre in New York; Michel Gascard, Christine Blanc, from Béjart Ballet Lausanne. Paola Cantalupo, Bernice Coppieters who are Etoiles at the Ballets de Monte Carlo.

At the end of October, 75 candidates from twenty-one countries were selected by DVD (from 192 applicants from thirty-two countries) and will come to compete in Lausanne from January 27 to February 1st, 2009. During the week of the competition they will be coached by internationally reputed ballet stars like Monique Loudières - Etoile from the Paris Opera, and Kevin Haigen - Principal from the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier. The competition ends Sunday February 1st with a final performance where the laureates receive direct scholarships to the world’s prime dance teaching institutions.

The Prix de Lausanne also provides a formidable platform for the professional dancing world to observe, discover, and connect with young dancing talents, making Lausanne the world’s capital for young dancers during the competition.

The 37th edition of the Prix de Lausanne 2009 will be held from January 27th to February 1st, 2009, at the Théâtre de Beaulieu in Lausanne.

Events open to the public:

Conference: Wednesday, January 28th, 2009, 3.30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. "Development of the ballet technique and its use nowadays" (in French only) by Paola Cantalupo and Sergiu Stefanschi, free of charge.

* Selections: Thursday, January 29th, 2009, 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (run-through of the classical variation), CHF 10.00 for the day.

* Selections: Friday, January 30th, 2009, 11.30 a.m to 12.30 p.m, (warm-up Barre, girls 15&16-year-olds), 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (coaching of the classical variation girls). CHF 10.00 for the day.

* Selections: Saturday, January 31st, 2009, 10:00 p.m. to 01:00 p.m. (classical and Neumeier variations 15&16-year-olds with jury) and 02:15 pm to 05:15 pm (classical and Neumeier variations 17&18-year- olds with jury). CHF 20.00 for the morning, CHF 20.00 for the afternoon.

* Finals: Sunday, February 1st, 2009, 3:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. (finalists: classical and Neumeier variations). Tickets CHF 20.00 to 80.00

Ticket Prices:

January 29th and 30th: 10 Swiss francs per day, children 7-14 years free

Saturday January 31st: 20 Swiss francs, morning and 20 Swiss francs, afternoon

From Wednesday to Saturday tickets on sale on the spot only, children 7-14 years free

For the Finals Sunday February 1st: 20 to 80 Swiss francs.
