Adolph BOLM, teacher

Recommended Posts

the attached scan shows an undated, unidentifed, uncredited photo of what is said to be Adolph Bolm.

as a former ballet master of the San Francisco Opera and the first official director of the San Francisco Opera Ballet School (during the mid-1930s), Bolm may be shown here in SF.

perhaps with current historical writing on SFB's 75th anniv. someone will recognize the particulars of this photo.

as champion of, to quote Lynn Garafola's informative entry in the International Encyclopedia of Dance, "Fokine's choreographic legacy and Diaghilev's tradition of living collaborators," Bolm brought these aspects "to the American heartland, shaping the tastes of a generation of dancers, choreographers, and audiences."

(incidentally, Garafola's IED entry includes a rare photo of Bolm as Apollo, complete with lyre, in his 1928 APOLLON MUSAGETE, which preceded Balanchine's version by about 3 weeks.)
