Painting of Nijinsky?

Recommended Posts

Is this a painting of Vaslav Nijinsky?

I purchased this painting a couple of years ago in an antique store. I immediately recognized it as a dancer. Could it be the one and only Nijinsky? It's unsigned, undated, but was likely created in the early 20th century in Europe.

Just a warning, the dancer in the painting is only wearing a dance belt.

Have a look and let me know what you think.

The elongated torso and short legs are nothing like the Bakst portrait of Nijinsky, in scanty bathing suit, standing on the beach on the Lido. (Reproduced in Richard Buckle, In Search of Diaghilev, p. 18/z-

Nose, brawniness, and pose seem very un-Massine as well. Most of the drawings and photos show large eyes and Roman nose.

Are you sure this is a dancer? The tight shoulders, brawny arms, squarely planted feet, and aggressive left fist remind me of a professional boxer or wrestler from the old days at Gold's Gym.
