Robert (who was best known as Bob) Gable

Recommended Posts

To those who might have been familiar with him, especially from his years as a devoted ‘regular’ of Fonteyn and most specifically Nureyev performances at Lincoln Center’s Metropolitan Opera, it will come as sad news to learn that Bob Gable died yesterday.

He’d recently been living in a nursing home after moving out of his Manhattan apartment, which was affected not long ago by a fire.

His ever cheerful presence and inimitable raspy voice were well known on the NY dance scene. His extensive collection of materials connected to Nureyev were carefully gathered and mounted by Bob into numerous scrapbooks, which were recently donated to the NYPL dance collection.

I suspect few who regularly attended NY-area performances, in particular, Met standees, could have missed Bob’s presence.

RIP.
