Abi Stafford Promoted to Principal Dancer

Savannah Lowery and Tyler Angle Promoted to Soloist

New York City Ballet announced today that Abi Stafford has been promoted to the rank of Principal Dancer, and Savannah Lowery and Tyler Angle have been promoted to the rank of Soloist. The promotions are effective immediately.

Abi Stafford was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and began her dance training at the age of six with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Ms. Stafford entered the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, as a full time student in the fall of 1998 and was invited to become an apprentice with the Company in November 1999. She joined the corps de ballet in January 2000 and was promoted to the rank of soloist in January 2002.

Since joining New York City Ballet, Ms. Stafford has danced featured roles in many of the Company’s works, including George Balanchine’s Ballo della Regina, Concerto Barocco, Cortège Hongrois, Divertimento No. 15, Episodes, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, Square Dance, Symphony in C, Symphony in Three Movements, Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, Union Jack, Valse-Fantaisie, and Who Cares?; Jerome Robbins’ Fanfare, Glass Pieces, and Piano Pieces; Peter Martins’ Fearful Symmetries, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake; and Christopher Wheeldon’s Klavier. Ms. Stafford was named the Janice Levin Dancer for the 2000-2001 season.

Savannah Lowery was born in Largo, Florida, and began her dance training at the age of three at the International Dance Academy in Seminole. Ms. Lowery entered the School of American Ballet in the fall of 1999. In November 2001, Ms. Lowery became an apprentice with New York City Ballet, and in October 2002 she joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet.

Since joining New York City Ballet, Ms. Lowery has performed featured roles in many works, including George Balanchine’s Agon, The Four Temperaments, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, “Rubies” from Jewels, and Raymonda Variations; and Peter Martins’ The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

Tyler Angle was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and began his dance training at the age of nine with Deborah Anthony at the Allegheny Ballet Company. He entered the School of American Ballet in the fall of 2001, and in the fall of 2003 Mr. Angle became an apprentice with New York City Ballet. Mr. Angle joined New York City Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in June 2004.

Since joining New York City Ballet, Mr. Angle has performed featured roles in George Balanchine’s Agon, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, Symphony in C, Liebeslieder Walzer; Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free, I’m Old Fashioned, In the Night, and 2 & 3 Part Inventions; Peter Martins’ Romeo + Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake; Sean Lavery’s Romeo and Juliet; Christopher Wheeldon’s Evenfall; and Eliot Feld’s The Unanswered Question. During the 2007 spring season, Mr. Angle originated the role of The Student in Christopher Wheeldon’s The Nightingale and the Rose. Mr. Angle was a 2002 recipient of the Mae L. Wien Award, a 2003 recipient of the Martin Segal Award, and a Jerome Robbins Scholarship recipient.
