Famous dance-related graves

Recommended Posts

After reading the following thread in the POB forum (about the grave of some famous dancers), it seemed to me that it could be interesting to try to compile some information about the graves of famous dancers, choreographers, ballet masters, etc.

So let's try to start a list here (please, if you want to post some information, be careful about duplicates, and also it would help to use always the same format: name, (dates), country, city, cemetery), and perhaps later, if there is enough information, it might be useful to create a web page about it.

Vaslav Nijinski (1889-1950): France, Paris, cimetière de Montmartre.

Claire Motte (1937-1986): France, Paris, cimetière des Batignolles.

Serge de Diaghilev (1872-1929): Italy, Venice, cimitero San Michele.

Igor Stravinsky (1882- 1971): Italy, Venice, cimitero San Michele.

Gaetano Vestris (1729-1808) and Auguste Vestris (1760-1842): France, Paris, cimetière de Montmartre.

Serge Lifar (1905-1986): France, Sainte-Geneviève des Bois, Russian cemetery.

Edited to add: there seems to be a lot of information about cemeteries and graves of famous people (especially in Paris) on the following site:

I recently became aware of a site devoted to just such a thing, finding information about where people are buried, both famous and not famous. Here are some links for specific dance related people from that site: (www.findagrave.com)

I love the opulence and arrogance of Nureyev's monument. Not to mention the wonderful look and sound of "Tombeau de Noureev." (Echoes of "Fountain of Bakhchisarai" or "Tombeau de Couperin".) What an intriguing ballet might be derived from such a name. I wonder what music would be apprpriate?

Does anyone have a personal story of visiting Nureyev's grave? Or any of the other graves of great ballet figurest?

(I've always had a kind of awe for the graves of literary and world-history figures, but will definitely be on the lookout for ballet graves in Paris this June. We will be staying in the same arrondisement as the cimitiere de montmartre, which I've not visited up to now.)

Well, I wonder if all infos of findagrave are accurate. They tell that Markova's burial took place in Westminster Abbey. While her memorial service was held there, I seriously doubt that the actual burial with the body was held in the Abbey.

Well in the interest of completeness I wrote an email to Westminster Abbey and received this in a response from a Christine Reynolds:

There was a memorial service at the Abbey for Dame Alicia but she is not buried here, nor is there a memorial stone for her.
