AN EVENING OF NEW WORKS BY ABT STUDIO COMPANY AT

THE NYU SKIRBALL CENTER, APRIL 27-28, 2007

The ABT Studio Company will present three performances at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, New York University, Friday April 27 at 8 P.M. and Saturday April 28, 2007 at 2 P.M. and 8 P.M. The program includes the Studio Company premiere of Antony Tudor’s Jardin aux Lilas, Brian Reeder’s Ghost Light, Kirk Peterson’s Nocturne, and Adam Hougland’s Vanish, as well as a World Premiere of Robert Sund’s Fine Line. Other works will include Peterson’s Eyes that Gently Touch and the pas de deux from Bournonville’s Flower Festival in Genzano.

The performances at the NYU Skirball Center will be highlighted by the ABT Studio Company premiere of Antony Tudor’s Jardin aux Lilas, staged by Donald Mahler. Set to the music of Ernest Chausson, Jardin aux Lilas was first performed by Ballet Rambert in 1936 and received its American Ballet Theatre premiere at the Company’s inaugural performances in 1940.

Brian Reeder’s Ghost Light, set to Music for the Theater by Aaron Copland, received its World Premiere in Buffalo, New York in January 2007. The University at Buffalo commissioned Ghost Light in collaboration with filmmaker Elliot Caplan. Ghost Light is Brian Reeder’s sixth work for the ABT Studio Company.

Robert Sund’s Fine Line, a pas de deux set to the music by Claudio Monteverdi, will be given its World Premiere by the ABT Studio Company on Saturday evening, April 28. Fine Line was choreographed for the Studio Company during their residency at White Oak Plantation in Florida. Sund has danced with Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet and has created original works for companies such as Netherlands Dance Theater, Frankfurt Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Stuttgart Ballet, as well as numerous companies around the United States.

Kirk Peterson’s Nocturne was created for Studio Company member Joseph Gorak and is set to music by Frederick Chopin. Nocturne was given its World Premiere in January in Buffalo, New York. Peterson’s Eyes That Gently Touch, originally choreographed for Pennsylvania Ballet, joins the repertoire of the ABT Studio Company this season. Set to music by Philip Glass, Eyes That Gently Touch is part of a trilogy of ballets by Peterson which includes Vortex and Amazed in Burning Dreams.

The ABT Studio Company is a small classical company of twelve young professional dancers. Directed by Kirk Peterson, the Studio Company prepares dancers to enter American Ballet Theatre and provides opportunities for the emergence of new choreographers and composers. Through national performances, lecture-demonstrations and academic residencies, the ABT Studio Company brings the excitement of close contact with a professional company into communities around the country.
