Pennsylvania Ballet Announces 2006 - 2007 Roster

Principal Dancer Alexei Borovik Retires on October 13, 2006

Artistic Director Roy Kaiser announced today changes to Pennsylvania Ballet’s roster for the 2006 – 2007 Season, which includes five promotions. The Company begins its 43rd Season this fall with 41 dancers, ranked into Principal, Soloist, Corps de Ballet and Apprentice positions.

Additionally, Principal Dancer Alexei Borovik will retire from the stage following the Company’s opening program, Romance and Revelry. Mr. Borovik will perform the lead in George Balanchine’s Apollo for the “Evening of Audience Favorites” program on Friday, October 13 at 7: 30 p.m.

Maximilien Baud, Michel Antoine Braun and Jermel Johnson were appointed to the Corps de Ballet, from their previous positions as Apprentices. Megan Dickinson, Rachel Maher and Ian Hussey were appointed to Apprentice positions, after each serving two years in Pennsylvania Ballet’s training program, Pennsylvania Ballet II.

“This year’s roster is very strong, and I am pleased to be able to promote these fine artists,” said Mr. Kaiser. “At the same time, we are sad to see Alexei retire after 14 years with the Company. His skill and artistry have been an enormous asset to Pennsylvania Ballet.”

Alexei Borovik was born in Russia and began his ballet training at age 10 at the Perm Ballet Academy. Upon graduating in 1979, he was invited to join the Perm Ballet Theatre. His reputation quickly established itself, and in 1982 he was elevated to Premiere Dancer. Mr. Borovik was awarded the Second Prize at The Artistic Ballet Competition in Moscow in 1984. In 1987, he won the Gold Medal at The Sixth Concourse International Ballet Festival in Peru and was honored with a decoration as “Merited Artist of Russia.” Since 1992, Mr. Borovik has been a Principal Dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet. His extensive repertoire includes principal roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and others. He has also danced the leading roles in George Balanchine’s Apollo, Rubies, The Four Temperaments, Tarantella, Serenade, Theme and Variations and Stars and Stripes, among others.

Founded in 1963 by Balanchine student Barbara Weisberger, Pennsylvania Ballet is one of the nation’s leading ballet companies. Headquartered in Philadelphia, the Company’s annual local season features six productions of classic favorites and new works, including the Philadelphia holiday tradition, The Nutcracker. Did anyone attend this farewell performance of Alexei Borovik? I would like to hear about it, as we could not attend -
