Satanella/carnival In Venice Pas De Deux

Recommended Posts

was there ever a disscussion regarding this little known Petipa/pugni pas de deux.....I was curious about its orgins.....Ive heard it referred to as the "fascination pas de deux", etc. with the ballerina wearing a mask a la Madonna 'Erotica' or 'Zorro'........

Diaries of Petipa says this pas (i believe its the same thing) as "Venetian Carnival Grand Pas de Deux" to music of Pugni based on a theme by Nicolo Paganini, w/ Petipa uncredited as choreographer, 2/12/1859....

theres also a work listed called "Satanilla" or "Love and Hell" to music by Napoleon Henri Reber orch. Konstantin Liadov, originally staged by Mazilier @ Paris Opera as "La Diable Amoureux" on 9/21/1840, revival 2/10/1848 @ Bolshoi Kammeny St. Petersburg.

was the pas de deux put into the ballet at some point? Why is the pas known as both "Satanella" and "Carnival in Venice"? does Satanella mean satan, or something like 'girl-devil'?

here are two NYPL cat. listings for compilation videotapes that were marketed with SATANELLA.

One of the first productions of Satanella was the one by Paolo Taglioni. It was arranged in a prologue and four scenes/acts. The music is credited to Hertel and Pugni. Some of the dances (pas), as written in the theatre program of Taglioni's production in the Teatro y Circo de Madrid, in 1874 mention a seduction pas de dix, an infernal mazurka, a quadrille, pas de fleurs for 48 female corps de ballet members. This version is prior to Petipa's and surely didn't include the today known Satanella pas de deux.

"Carnival in Venice" was a vaudeville, with lots of songs, dances, comic routines, and so on. "Satanella" was a version of the work set entirely as a ballet.

Above you will find a link to the YouTube page where Satanella is posted, almost all ballets you want are uploaded in full on Youtube. You can also download them and burn to DVD using a youtube to video converter. Or enjoy them as they are.

Here is the dance by Tatiana Podpokayeva who danced "Talisman"... It wasnt really Talisman, it's The Stream or La Source Pas de Deux... This isn't actually her, it's another graduating student at the Vaganova Ballet Academy.

La Source Pas de Deux

And last but not least is Talisman Pas de Deux.
