Pennsylvania Ballet Announces the Promotion of Philip Colucci to Soloist

February 15, 2006

Pennsylvania Ballet Artistic Director Roy Kaiser announced today that Philip Colucci has been appointed to Soloist, from his previous position in the Corps de Ballet.

“Phil possesses not only the technical ability, but also the dramatic depth to perform many of the leading roles of our repertoire,” said Mr. Kaiser. “We are thrilled to promote him and showcase his talent.”

Born and raised in Malaga, N. J., Philip Colucci began dancing at age 10 with the Vineland Regional Dance Company. During his high school years, he completed additional training in summer dance programs at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet and Houston Ballet. In 1995, Mr. Colucci enrolled in the dance program at The Juilliard School, under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy, and continued training in summer programs with San Francisco, Boston and Pacific Northwest ballets.

Upon receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Juilliard in 1999, Mr. Colucci joined Pennsylvania Ballet as an Apprentice and was promoted to the Corps de Ballet in August 2000. He has danced featured roles in George Balanchine’s Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Peter Martin’s Fearful Symmetries, Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free and The Concert, Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella and Dracula, Kevin O’Day’s Quartet for IV, Paul Taylor’s Company B and Arden Court, and Jeffrey Gribler’s Cricket Dances. He has also created original roles for three world premieres: Jessica Lang’s Undercurrents, Trey McIntyre’s Plush and Matthew Neenan’s 11:11.

In addition, Mr. Colucci has had the opportunity to work with such choreographers as Lila York, Igal Perry, Lar Lubovitch, Thaddeus Davis and Sonia Dawkins. He also performed with the Peridance Ensemble at the Florence Dance Festival in 1998, SD Prism Dance Theatre and Phrenic New Ballet. In 2004, Mr. Colucci received a Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly Award” and a Philadelphia Fringe Festival “Rocky Award.” In 2002, he was given the City Paper’s “Choice Award.” Mr. Colucci was also a recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace Award in 1998, and he will be featured in an upcoming issue of Pointe Magazine for his work as a black belt in karate.

Founded in 1963 by Balanchine student Barbara Weisberger, Pennsylvania Ballet is one of the nation’s leading ballet companies. Headquartered in Philadelphia, the Company’s annual local season features six productions of classic favorites and new works, including the Philadelphia holiday tradition, The Nutcracker.
