Anna Pavlova 75th anniversary

In between performances at Covent Garden at the weekend, I managed to find my way to Ivy House on Sunday Morning.

The exhibition is in the basement of her house where she lived from 1910 to the time of her demise in 1931. It has been modernised and is presently owned-occupied by the Jewish Cultural Centre.

Admission is free and as it is thought that her father although unknown was most likely Jewish, hence the connection to the Cultural Centre. It is a small but lovely showing of photos etc, well worth the visit just to view the 1935 video which lasts for about an hour.

The video made a cold and wet Sunday trip very much worthwhile. It showed Pavlova visiting some of the 44 countries which she travelled to. The highlights in the video were her ballet performances, including the Dragonfly and several others.

My goodness, could she dance - all the qualities needed for an outstanding ballet dancer were there. Flexibility and perfect balance with a mental agility which was obvious in her outgoing love for life. Love too she had in plenty for those things around her including her swans to which both her and they had a close affinity.

Back in those days North End Road in Golders Green was a leafy avenue - more akin to being in the country than in sububia.

For those of you wanting to visit, turn left out of Golders Green tube station and walk up the hill for about 10 minutes, it is on the right.

A lady ahead of her time.
