purelyballet
After reading the marvelous reviews that PABallet received during their performances at the Edinbugh Festival this summer, I am elated that I will be able to attend their 2005/2006 season opening of Swan Lake. I just went to the PABallet website to see if I could find the cast listing and noticed that it was not posted yet. Does anyone have any idea when they will be posting this? Link to comment

Petra
Dale - I think your post leaves out the roles of Odette/Odile and Siegfried. I'm going to the evening performance on Oct 1. Link to comment
Helene
Dale - I think your post leaves out the roles of Odette/Odile and Siegfried. I'm going to the evening performance on Oct 1. It was my fault -- in the process of breaking up the text blocks by performance, I inadvertently deleted Odette-Odile and Prince Siegfried casting. I've addded them back. The leads for the 1 October evening performance are Julie Diana and Yury Yanowsky. Link to comment
purelyballet
Thanks for posting the casting. I can not wait to see this again. I will be attending opening night along with both performances on Saturday. For those of you that have not had the chance to see PABallet perform this ballet, I recommend it highly Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
Per the press office, Julie Diana is not doing the run of Swan Lake because of scheduling conflicts for her partner, Yury Yanowsky. Link to comment
socalgal
That's a shame.......wonder what happened.......since the casting was up and posted at the PAB web site. And even sadder to know that Julie cannot dance this run at all for lack of a partner.........sigh......... Link to comment
lillianna
Last night was opening night in Philadelphia. I really enjoyed the production much more than when it opened 2 years ago. There were many last minute substitutions due to injuries. Riolama was gorgeous as Odette/Odile. The Swan corps was magnificent. The fourth act was breathtaking as the swans moved as one though the patterns. The third act has been much improved since the original. The Pas de Quarte was performed by Valeria Amiss, Abigail Mentzer, Matthew Neenan and Alexander Iziliaev. Czardas by Gabriella Yudenich and Meridith Rainey, Spanish by Heidi Cruz with Yosbel Delgado and James Ihde. The audience obviously approved, they gave the company an enthusiastic standing ovation at the end of the evening. I am looking forward to seeing the 2 shows today. Link to comment
socalgal
Thanks for the review, lillianna! I would love to know more about the choreographic changes that were made in Act III.....were there any changes in the opening as well? I agree that the swan corps is extremely powerful in the final act. Wish I could be there watching with you! Link to comment
lillianna
I saw the Wheeldon Swan Lake on the first opening night 2 years ago. So, my memory of the changes might not be spot on. Act 3 seemed very different to me this time, much more together. I felt very confused by the act before, the tables cluttered up the stage, people were wandering around and even outside of the scene but visible through the windows. That has changed. The tables are to the rear of the stage and the dancing is clearly in focus. The waltz sequences help pull it together. I still do not like the can can number, really dislike the costumes and wigs and the music and dancing do not seem to jive. It is not really the routinely heard can can music. The act seems to have more energy than before. I was lucky enough to be able to see the first 3 shows this time. Friday night and both Saturday shows. I think that seeing it more than once is helpful. James Ady and Arantxa performed the principal roles in the Saturday matinee. They did a beautiful job. Julie Diana performed the Russian dance and was flawless. Zach Hench and Riolama Lorenzo performed the principal roles on Saturday evening since Yuri Yanowsky is not available to perform with Julie Diana. Zach Hench is having some problems with his foot so the variations had to be skipped for his shows. Everyone did a wonderful job. I continued to be awed by the perfection of the swan corps in all of the shows. Other standouts to me: Riolama Lorenzo is so amazing as Odette/Odile. Her gorgeous extensions and positions really add to the enjoyment of the role. She stays in the role, IS the swan queen. I was impressed by the Cygnets in all 3 shows but especially Saturday evenings cast of Rebecca Azenberg, Laura Bowman, jessica Gattinella, Courtney Hellebuyck. I LOVED Gabriella Yudenich in Big Swans and Julie Diana in Russian. There were multiple cast changes related to injuries. So, the company is to be congratulated that everything looked so wonderful even though substitutions were required. Link to comment
socalgal
WoW! Julie dancing Russian......would have loved to have seen that. Thanks for your wonderful recall regarding Act III changes, lillianna. I am glad to hear that the stage was cleared as it did seem cluttered with tables as first seen and that the action was clearer with the revised waltz section et al. Cheers to PAB! Link to comment
pugbee
Courtney Hellebuyck -- not a name I recognize. Is she perhaps a new apprentice, or PABII dancers? Thanks for your reviews, lillianna!! Link to comment
lillianna
Courtney is an extra dancer with the company. She was a SFB trainee last year. She is a wonderful dancer, clean technically with beautiful movement quality. Link to comment
BW
Thank you to everyone for being the eyes of those of us who haven't been able to make it to see these performances! I'm particularly pleased to read your views lillianna - and would love to have been there with you. Maybe it's not too late for me if I can swing it. I'm thrilled to read about your loving Gabriella Yudenich in her role as one of the Big Swans! I can't help but think that Ms. Yudenich's dancing has as much to do with her background seeing that both of her parents, the late Alexi Yudenich, her father, and her mother Barbara Sandonato, were both breath taking dancers themselves. Although I have never had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Yudenich perform, I have seen her in the ballet studio where her classicism and artistry were plain for anyone to see. I also enjoyed reading about the differences you noticed between this year and last year's performances. Now I'll have to go over to search the links section to see if there have been any newspaper articles about this run of Wheeldon's Swan Lake - and read more about the Pennsylvania Ballet's performances of it. It seems like a run to Philly may just have to happen - and soon! Again thanks to everyone who has posted and please let us hear more! I wish the PA Ballet would come to NYC - or the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College - to share their wealth with us up here. Link to comment
lillianna
Hurry, the run ends tomorrow. Seeing the swan corps was certainly worth the trip. Gabriella Yudenich had many nice roles during Swan Lake. In addition to the beautiful Big Swan role, she also did Czardas and Can Can. Another young new corps member, Abi Mentzer is also a stand out. She performed in the Pas deQuatre and Cygnets. Apprentice Jermel Johnson was a stand out in the Pas de Trois. PA Ballet has a number of very promising younger dancers on the rise. With the addition of Julie Diana , Zach Hench and Riolama Lorenzo in the last few years, the company is coming on strong. Don't miss it. Link to comment
driver of a dancer
We saw the Sunday October 2 , 2pm performance. The four little swans were precision with a capital P, precision even to the breathing. !!! All corps dances were equally precise. Link to comment
BW
Unfortunately, I did not make it. I am so sorry I missed this, but I do appreciate everyone's detailed impressions of the company and a number of its dancers. I need to go refresh myself as to who is in PA Ballet II and keep my eyes peeled for their names as well - though I do recognize several. Great to read so much good news about this company - as well as Wheeldon's Swan Lake, too. Link to comment
lillianna
The PA Ballet II website has not been updated yet this season. The new dancers have not been added and the dancers promoted to apprenticeships are not yet removed from the PBII site. Link to comment
socalgal
Yes, lillianna........and the company's dancers page is not updated either to include new members and all the promoted apprentices to corps. You can go to press releases and read the bios on the new PAB II group and also read the press release on the new roster to PAB for '05-'06. Link to comment
