Dale Posted May 4, 2005 Author Share Posted May 4, 2005 Is there nobody else other than Martins who can perform Apollo? Isn't it time to give some other dancers a chance at this? If the company doesn't have somebody to dance an Apollo, one of the signature roles of NYCB, than it is in trouble, no? Neal performed Apollo (to great effect) for Suzanne Farrell. Can he get a sniff of the role at his home company? Millepied? Somebody? (Sébastien Marcovici would be interesting in it, but he's still injured) Link to comment
Dale Posted May 4, 2005 Author Share Posted May 4, 2005 No offense to Hubbe (I love his portrayal) but he's not an up-and-comer or in the prime of his career. The next generation needs to perform these roles now, while they can still be coached by a Boal or Hubbe. I don't like to quote my own articles, but in an interview with Ballet Alert, Boal expressed that he thought it was time for other (younger) dancers to take on Apollo and Prodigal Son. He got his chance before he was 30 and he thought Millepied and Marcovici should get their chance before they become too old. Link to comment

Dale Posted May 4, 2005 Author Share Posted May 4, 2005 I'm not looking for a replacement for Hubbe. But he and Boal were able to build up there interpretations of Apollo on stage over time. Other dancers need to get that chance too, especially if the ballet is to continue to thrive in this company. How much can an interpretation evolve if the dancer gets his first chance at 32? oberon Posted May 5, 2005 Share Posted May 5, 2005 I think Marcovici & Hubbe are currently injured. I don't mind seeing Nilas in it, in fact I saw him do a very fine one a couple years ago. But we do need some new ones, now Boal is departing. I would like to see any of these men try Apollo: Albert Evans Charles Askegard Stephen Hanna Benjamin Millepied James Fayette Jared Angle Philip Neal Edwaard Liang Ask LaCour Adam Hendrickson Antonio Carmena Seth Orza Sean Suozzi Andrew Veyette Amar Ramasar I once proposed Joaquin de Luz for both Apollo & Prodigal but there were some objections. Is it just because he's short? Robert Tewsley would be remarkable, I think, but I guess it would have to be as a guest artist at this point. Too bad his NYCB career was so riddled with injuries. I am willing to suspend disbelief. I'm pretty sure he's done the role in small touring groups, but I think he could bring his own stamp to it at NYCB. Another vote for Evans here! Hendrickson. Hmmm. Interesting idea. I'll enjoy imagining that one, and maybe he will get a chance at the role before too long. Link to comment

Phillip Neal I think would bring great elegence to the role as well as Sebastien Marcovici. But Oberon mention a name I never once thought of, James Fayette. It could be very interesting watching him tackling this role, at the very least his muses would have one of the best partnered Apollos. But all this talking about Apollo made me think of another signature ballet from NYCB, The Prodigal Son. I could be wrong but it does seem that currently Peter Boal is the only dancer that has both ballets in his repertoire. I know that Damian Woetzel dance Prodigal and maybe Nikolaj Hubbe, he I'm not sure, but if they are the only three, soon to be minus one, dancers performing this ballet, then Peter Martins should be looking in the ranks to find other dancers to fill this important role. Benjamin Millepied comes to mind as well as Joaquin de Luz. Link to comment

I like your Muses, too, Susan, and while I think Gillian would be a really fine Terpsichore, I'd just love to see Veronika in that role. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Veronika came to mind as soon as I started thinking about the Muses, but then I thought I'd wait to see how she does in Ballet Imperial. She has such a wonderful quality about her dancing, both expansive & expressive, but I'm not sure it's the kind of quality I prefer for Balanchine's works. On the other hand, I knew I wanted to see Murphy in more Balanchine the first time I saw her in Theme & Variations. Link to comment
