sports/TV ad has ballet!

Recommended Posts

I was watching a basketball game (in USA) with my husband and really enjoyed one of the ads. It is an ad for a television, and features Seattle Seahawks quarterback (football) Matt Hasselback "enjoying his offseason" watching his large television. As the narrator blathers on about the TV, Matt keeps flipping channels, frowning at all the selections. At the end, he finds a channel with a ballet (music is Chinese from Nutcracker, though the dancers don't look like chinese to me!) and sits back in his chair with a smile on his face, obviously finally happy with the program.

Has anyone else seen this ad? It may have been a cable ad, I'm not sure. I was sure happy to see a major sports figure portrayed as enjoying a good ballet in a lighthearted way!

With no irony??? That's great! A more typical commercial scenario is the man being dragged to the ballet by his woman -- or using his acquiescene to make a score. I imagine there were numerous expensive focus groups who saw and commented on this before it was screened. So perhaps it's a good cultural sign..

It is hard to say - maybe they were going for a bit of comedy: "a rough-and-tough quarterback by day, a ballet-watcher by night" sort of thing. I didn't think so, and if they were it was playful instead of mean. There were no women in the commercial (for him to be impressing) and no friends there to poke fun at him for his selection. I got a huge smile on my face after watching it - maybe they did it just for any basketball-widows like me. :)
