2004-2005 Performance Schedule

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any information on when the PABallet 2004-2005 schedule will be posted? I tried to go on line to the Academy of Music and could not find anything about dates of times for upcoming ballets. I also went onto the PABallet site and I was able to pull up a press release on the 2004-2005 season, however, it did not give exact times and dates.

yes I have that schedule. However, what I am looking for are the exact dates and times for the Balanchine series (Agon, Ballo della Regin and Slaughter) so that I can purchase tickets. I went onto the PABallet site and the Academy of Music site and was unable to find this information on either site. Thanks

Here's the release I've been sent:

Broadway Meets Ballet in Pennsylvania Ballet’s

Season-Opening Program, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue

Pennsylvania Ballet begins its 41st season with Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, a program of three masterpieces that celebrate the 100th anniversary of George Balanchine’s birth, November 3 through 7 at the Academy of Music. The program includes Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Ballo della Regina and Agon. Tickets range from $20 to $99 and are available beginning October 5 by phone at 215-893-1999 or online at www.paballet.org.

Broadway meets ballet in Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, the hilarious story of a dancer who falls in love with the girlfriend of a big mob boss. This Chicago-style one act takes place in a 1930s strip joint and features sensual and show-stopping choreography to Richard Rodgers’ score, orchestrated by Hershy Kay. Balanchine originally choreographed Slaughter as part of Rodgers and Hart’s Broadway musical On Your Toes in 1936. This mini Broadway musical-like ballet first premiered as a stand-alone piece by New York City Ballet in 1968, with Suzanne Farrell and Arthur Mitchell as the leads.

Ballo della Regina, which translates to “dance of the queen”, is a virtuoso set of variations, comparable to the bel canto style of opera. It is set to ballet music extracted from the original opera production of Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlo. Originally created for Merrill Ashley (who will stage the work on the Company) and former Pennsylvania Ballet artistic director Robert Weiss (when he was a principal dancer at New York City Ballet), Ballo della Regina is classical ballet in its purest form, with quick and precise pointe work and grand bravura enhanced by iridescent pastel costumes.

The last of Balanchine’s three collaborative projects with composer Igor Stravinsky, Agon is an abstract masterpiece. Choreographed with extreme precision to the music, Agon is a rhythmic ballet based on a 17th century manual of French court dances. With twelve dancers executing sharp movements, Agon is, in Balanchine’s own words, “like a machine that thinks.”

Performances of Slaughter on Tenth Avenue are as follows:

- Wednesday, November 3 at 8 p.m.

- Thursday, November 4 at 8 p.m.

- Saturday, November 6 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

- Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m.
