Alexandra
Many thanks to Mme. Hermine for finding this interview, transcribing it, AND getting permission for us to use it! Dick Cavett Interview with Ashton Link to comment
Jane Simpson
I wonder if the place name Mme. Hermine couldn't quite pick up could be Aix-les-Bains? Ashton spent a holiday with Stein and Toklas near there one year, according to Julie Kavanagh's book. Link to comment
Mme. Hermine
It could be, Jane. I'll take another listen. Thanks! Link to comment
Leigh Witchel
This is a wonderful interview. It's a trivial recollection and not central to any of Ashton's points, but according to the Taper biography (p. 180) Balanchine asked for the credit "choreography by" in 1936 for On Your Toes rather than Agnes deMille for a later work like Rodeo.
