Mme. Hermine
Robert Greskovic writes about Yuriko in the New York Times: http://nytimes.com/2004/05/16/arts/dance/16GRES.html BEFORE royal watchers had Diana and pop culture had Madonna and Prince, the world of modern dance had Yuriko. This 84-year-old, American-born Japanese dancer, who gained fame as a prominent member of Martha Graham's troupe from the 1940's to the 1960's, chose her single professional name for practical reasons. Yuriko dropped Amemiya, her family name, when she was dancing as a teenager in her native California because, as she put it, "a hundred percent of the time the spelling was wrong." Sure enough, the reference to Yuriko in the 1998 International Encyclopedia of Dance misspells it. Link to comment
