Washington's Revolutionary 'Nutcracker'

Septime Webre Plans to Set Ballet Classic In the Capital

George Washington and King George III will leap into the action along with Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Washington Ballet's new "Nutcracker," premiering in December, the company is expected to announce today.

The parlor of a tony Georgetown mansion and the banks of the Potomac, with cherry blossoms in full bloom, will be the setting for this American-history-inspired "Nutcracker." Choreographed by Artistic Director Septime Webre, the fanciful $1 million production -- the priciest in company history -- will replace company founder Mary Day's traditional homespun version that has been a holiday staple for 42 years, seen by hundreds of thousands of people.

"Building a new 'Nutcracker' is really one of our dreams," board president Kay Kendall said yesterday. But the ballet was a dream deferred until the company got the go-ahead from Day, who dearly wanted to see her choreography remain a part of the Washington Ballet as long as she did.

new costumes, sets and everything!

my absolute nutcracker pet peeve is overly-extravagent sets for the Land of Sweets :) ...for instance the one in the NYCB nut movie...the narrated one.

i loved how Washington's set for Land of Sweets was so simple yet elegant....pretty colors....but not distracting

cannot wait to see arabian done with native american theme...sounds cool!
