How do you pronounce Kostchei (Kastchei) the evil magician in Firebird? Is there a prefered spelling? I'm labeling costumes as I speak (well type)!

My Russian dance teacher friend (who is very attractive) graduated in 1996 from the Saratov Choreographic College. She laughed when I asked her about this. She said the first cut during the admission process at any serious Russian dance academy was based on good looks. They wouldn't even consider you if you weren't reasonable attractive.

Yes, it was horrible, but at least it exposed ballet to a group of people (Tonight Show viewers)who might not see ANY ballet.

I would like to put in a plug for my hometown professional ballet company Carolina Ballet located in Raleigh, North Carolina. As for black ballet dancers, we have Christopher Rudd, originally from Jamaica, who trained at the Miami Conservatory and Isanusi Garcia from the Cuban National Ballet in Havana. And, of course, we are most fortunate to have the talented Debra Austin as Ballet Master.

Congratulations to Chris Wheeldon. I had the honor of meeting Chris yesterday. I walked the stage for lighting for Wheeldon's new piece "The American" which premieres Saturday, May 5 at the Reynolds Theater at Duke University. Carolina Ballet is performing Wheeldon's work along with premieres by Richard Tanner and Tyler Walters.
